Harold II, last Anglo-Saxon king of England, 1066 (1070s). Harold (c1022-1066) and companions feasting. Harold's succession to the throne was disputed by William of Normandy, who invaded England in 1066 and defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings to claim the English crown. From the Bayeux Tapestry. The tapestry, which tells the story of the events leading to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, was probably commissioned by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, William's half-brother.
