The image on the left shows the ciliary muscles relaxing to increase tension of the suspensory ligaments and keep the lens flattened to focus on distant objects. On the right, the ciliary muscles contract, causing the suspensory ligaments to relax and allow the lens to form a rounder shape and increase its refractive power to focus on nearby objects.
