Henry Ireton (1611 - November 26, 1651) was an English general and son-in-law of Oliver Cromwell. His regiment was chosen by lot to accompany Cromwell in his Irish campaign. In June 1651 Ireton besieged the city of Limerick for five months until it surrendered in October 1651. After the capture, Ireton had dignitaries of Limerick hanged for their defense of the city, including Alderman Thomas Stritch a Bishop (Turlough O'Brien), Terence Albert O'Brien and an English Royalist officer, Colonel Fennell.
