Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. created in 1887. A tour of North Wales. 39.Harlech Castle, from the Meadows.— This fine Castle is the remains of a once important fortress, situated on an elevated rock about half-a-mile from the sea. We are at once struck with the beauty of its situation and strength, a high perpendicular cliff, on the side nearest the sea, rendering it inaccessible. Like most of the other castles in the principality, this owes its erection to Edward I. Its siege bv Edward IV., when held by a Welsh warrior for the House of Lancaster, gave rise to that fine and popular air, The March of the Men of Harlech. A magnificent view of the Snowdonian range and Car¬narvonshire mountains is obtained from the Castle itself, Harlech means bold rock. Ten miles further is.
