Hookworm larva trail

Cutaneous larva migrans (creeping eruption) trail of hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale). Ancylostoma is a parasitic nematode which lives in the small intestine of a variety of mammals including humans, dogs, cats, and wild carnivores. Ankylostomiasis is the disease caused by hookworm. It is caused when multitudes of hookworms produce an iron deficiency anemia by sucking blood from the host's intestinal walls. The name is derived from Greek ''ancylo'' meaning ''crooked'' and ''stoma'' meaning ''mouth.'' Hookworm is a leading cause of maternal and child morbidity in the developing countries of the tropics and subtropics.
