Chinatown Opium Den

Opium smokers reclining on low beds and benches in a Chinese clubhouse drawn by Winslow Homer for Harper's Weekly, 1874. According to Homer he sat for hours with the somewhat malevolent face's of the gods beaming down on him from a wall altar in front of which incense burned and an offering of stuffed birds was placed. Chinese sailors gambled with dominoes. The walls were decorated with scrolls bearing club rules and news of the Celestial Empire. A small altar, with incense and a lamp burning before a scroll listing the names of dead members.
