Prehistoric Man, Stone Age Rock Shelter

Entitled: "On the brow of the cliff above, there was discovered, in 1866, a fire hearth of the prehistoric period; this hearth and its surroundings have afforded us the most complete idea of one of the rock-shelters of man during the reindeer epoch." A rock shelter is a shallow cave-like opening at the base of a bluff or cliff. Originally termed L'âge du renne (the Age of the Reindeer) the Upper Paleolithic (Late Stone Age) is the third and last subdivision of the Paleolithic or Old Stone Age. Very broadly, it dates to between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago, roughly coinciding with the appearance of behavioral modernity and before the advent of agriculture. The Upper Paleolithic has the earliest known evidence of organized settlements, in the form of campsites, some with storage pits. Artistic work blossomed, with cave painting, petroglyphs, carvings and engravings on bone or ivory. Caption excerpted from "Primitive Man" by Louis Figuier, 1871.
