Polish weapons taken by the Germans, Palace of Warsaw, Poland, World War II, 1944. Artist: Unknown

Polish weapons taken by the Germans, Palace of Warsaw, Poland, World War II, 1944. The Warsaw Uprising was an operation mounted on 1 August 1944 by the Polish resistance against the Nazi occupation. It was timed to coincide with the arrival of the advancing Red Army in Warsaw, but controversially, the Soviets stopped their advance in the city's eastern suburbs, leaving the Poles to fight the much more heavily armed Germans on their own. The uprising was put down after 63 days of bitter fighting with heavy casualties, particularly amongst Warsaw's civilian population, and most of the city's buildings destroyed.
