American Civil War, Battle of Jonesboro, 1864

Lithograph entitled and captioned: "The Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia, September 1st, 1864. General Sherman leaving the Twentieth Corps, withdrew the rest of his army before Atlanta, and the rebels began to rejoice over his supposed retreat, when suddenly he reappeared to their astonished vision fifteen miles south from Atlanta attacked the Rebels at Jonesboro. Capturing their forks, ten guns and 200 prisoners, and inflicting upon them a loss of 3000 killed and wounded, the Rebel General Hood being completely 'Hoodwinked' in the words of General Sherman, 'blew up his magazines at Atlanta, and left in the night time, when the 20th Corps General Slocum took possession of that place', adding the proudest trophy of all, to the Conquering arms of our Noble Army of the West." The Battle of Jonesborough (modern name Jonesboro) was fought August 31 - September 1, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign. Two Union armies led by Major General William T. Sherman maneuvered to draw the Army of Tennessee (led by John Bell Hood) away from their defenses at Atlanta, Georgia, where it could be destroyed. The city of Atlanta was abandoned and then occupied by Union troops for the rest of the war.
