Salonica: View from the Turkish Cemetery, 1876. 'In consequence of this deplorable affair [the Salonika Incident]...the British, French, Russian, Austrian, and German ships of war in the Levant have been ordered to Salonica, to protect the subjects and property of those nations. It was on Saturday, May 6, that the fanatical Mussulman mob attacked and murdered the German and French Consuls, Mr. Henry Abbott and his brother-in-law, M. Paul Moulin, who had taken refuge in a mosque...The Turkish Government at once promised full inquiry and satisfaction in the punishment of the murderers. Six of them were condemned and publicly executed on Monday last...Salonica, which is, next to Constantinople, the most important town of European Turkey, is situated at the head of a spacious bay of the Aegean Sea, nearly opposite the Dardanelles'.
