Calico Jack, English Pirate

John Rackham (December 27, 1682 - November 18, 1720), commonly known as Calico Jack, was an English pirate captain operating in the Bahamas and in Cuba during the early 18th century. He is most remembered for two things: the design of his Jolly Roger flag, a skull with crossed swords, and for having two female crew members, Mary Read and Anne Bonny (his lover). He and his crew were captured on October 20, 1720. Their ship was anchored and crew unprepared, because the day before, they captured Spanish commercial ship and were celebrating all night. According to testimonies, only Mary and Anne resisted. He and his crew were found guilty, for crime of piracy. Anne and Mary were reprieved, when it was discovered they were both pregnant.
