His father, John Lockwood Kipling, had been appointed professor of architectural sculpture at J.J. School of Art, later he became its dean. He and his family were accommodated on site, living in the type of rambling, spacious bungalow the colonial British cherished, surrounded by lush greenery and cheerful birdsong.
