Extra Hazardous Duty - As Boxer's 45,000 tons Knifes past, Lt Jg Droege's plane disintegrates in the water. Droege himself is still under water. As this photo was taken, Droege had unbuckled his safety belt which Kept him from being killed, had shed his crash helmet, and was swimming away from the sinking plane. The helicopter, although not in the photo, is already hovering over the roiled water waiting hopefully for his head to pop up to the surface. In the helicopter with Lt. Buerokkoltz is Crawman L.A. Wight, Chief Aviation Machinists mate of 5520 Peru Place, San Diego, Cal. May 19, 1951. (Photo by Official US Navy Photograph).
