French Revolution, Guillotine, 18th Century

Execution by guillotine in Paris during the French Revolution. The guillotine is a device used for carrying out executions by decapitation. It consists of a tall upright frame from which an angled blade is suspended. This blade is raised with a rope and then allowed to drop, severing the head from the body. The device is noted for long being the main method of execution in France and, more particularly, for its use during the French Revolution. It was first used in the execution of Nicolas Pelletier, a common criminal, on April 25th, 1792. The deadly machine quickly moved on to more famous victims such as Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, Danton, Robespierre, and many others.
