Explosion of the USS Missouri,1843

The first USS Missouri was one of the first steam warships in the US Navy. On August 6,1843, she embarked Caleb Cushing, on his journey to negotiate the first commercial treaty with China. Missouri arrived on Gibraltar on August 25 and anchored in harbor. On the night of the 26th, the engineer's yeoman accidentally broke and ignited a demijohn of turpentine in the storeroom. In four hours, the steam frigate was reduced to a blackened, sinking hulk, the forward powder magazine exploded, destroying the still burning ship. Witnessed by Captain Sartorius and the Officers of the HMS Malabar. Lithograph by T.G. Dutton, undated (cropped and cleaned).
