The pillory was a device made of a wooden or metal framework erected on a post, with holes for securing the head and hands, formerly used for punishment by public humiliation and often further physical abuse. The pillory is related to the stocks. Ernest Nister (1841-1906) was a publisher and printer of movable books for children and paper ephemera such as greeting cards, post cards, and calendars. He refined the techniques used in the design of magic windows, dissolving picture, and pop-up books, publishing them from his firm based in Nuremberg, a toy-making center of the 19th century. Reprinting, Nuremberg, 1910.
