Microscopic Thames Water or Monster Soup,1828

Engraving meant to satirize the state of London's water supply, 1828. Entitled 'Monster Soup,' by William Heath, the caricature shows a woman looking at a drop of Thames water under a spyglass or microscope. It is full of scary monsters. Original caption: "Monster soup commonly called Thames water, being a correct representation of that precious stuff doled out to us!!! Microcosm, dedicated to the London Water Companies, Brought Forth All Monstrous, All Prodigious Thigs [sic], Hydras, and Gorgons, and Chimeras Dire. Vide Milton. ['Paradise Lost', ii.]".
