Voyager's Golden Record

Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab holds a replica of the golden record carried on Voyager at a press conference at NASA Headquarters in Washington. The record was intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. It is a gold-plated audio-visual disc carrying photos of Earth and its lifeforms, spoken greetings, and a medley of sounds found on Earth. Voyager 1 is the first human-made object to venture into interstellar space. The 36-year-old probe is about 12 billion miles (19 billion kilometers) from our sun. It is expected to continue its mission until 2025, when it's generators will no longer be able to supply enough power to operate its instruments.
