Andre Marie Ampère, French Physicist

Andre Marie Ampère (January 20, 1775 - June 10, 1836) French physicist, chemist, and mathematician. Ampère established the relations between electricity and magnetism, and in developing the science of electromagnetism, or, as he called it, electrodynamics. In 1820 he demonstrated that parallel wires carrying currents attract or repel each other, depending on whether currents are in the same (attraction) or in opposite directions (repulsion). This laid the foundation of electrodynamics. Ampère developed a mathematical theory which not only described the electromagnetic phenomena already observed, but also predicted many new ones. A law of electromagnetism and unit of measurement of electric current are named after him: Ampere's Law and the ampere. He died in 1836 at the age of 61. His name is one of the 72 names inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.
