The Phoenician civilization appeared in Phoenicia, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in the area where Lebanon is today. The Phoenicians were the most daring sailors of their time. Thanks to the Lebanon cedar, a tree whose wood is highly resistant, they specialized in ship construction. From about 1200 BC, the Phoenicians built up a true empire of the seas. They were probably the first to venture into the turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean. They apparently sailed as far as the British Isles and even skirted a good part of the African continent.
