Although most Moroccan Jews tend to dress in styles of their adopted countries, traditional Moroccan clothing is sometimes worn during celebrations or even during more intimate gatherings, such as Shabbat dinner. Men usually wear a white jellaba cloak while women wear more ornate kaftans. In 1879-80 Oskar Lenz led the first trans-Sahara expedition from Morocco to Senegal and became the fourth European to visit the fabled city of Timbuktu.
