Lithograph entitled: "Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York, October 17th, 1777. From the original painting by Trumbell." John Burgoyne (February 24, 1722 - August 4, 1792) was a English army officer, politician and dramatist. Appointed to capture Albany and end the rebellion, Burgoyne advanced from Canada but soon found himself surrounded and outnumbered. He surrendered his army of 5,000 men to the American troops. George Washington (February 22, 1732 - December 14, 1799) was the first President of the USA, from 1789-97, and dominant military and political leader 1775-99. He was one of the Founding Fathers and hailed as "father of his country" even during his lifetime. He presided over the convention that drafted the US Constitution, which replaced the Articles of Confederation and which remains the supreme law of the land.
