GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. 'Here is a Gentlemen, and a friend of mine!', c1820. Satirical cartoon from a political pamphlet: '"The question is not merely whether the Queen shall have her rights, but whether the rights of any individual in the kingdom shall be free from violation"; Her Majesty's Answer to the Norwich Address'. George IV has fallen from a 'Matrimonial Ladder' at the top of which sits Queen Caroline. The broken rungs are labelled 'Degradation, Coronation, Publication, Accusation, Consternation' etc. 'Here is a Gentlemen, and a friend of mine!' is a quote from "Measure for Measure" by Shakespeare. From an album containing portraits and satirical caricatures related to the trial of Queen Caroline (1768-1821, also known as Caroline of Brunswick, consort of King George IV) in 1820.
