CHARLES DICKENS. From the original at the National Portrait Gallery - Painting by Aryscheffer. 1855. His original signature can be seen in the Guildhall Library, London, on a letter written by him to Samuel Phelps, 29th August 1847, on his performance of Cymbeline, Saddlers Wells Theatre. Born at Landport, Portsea, 1812. Died at Gadshill, Rochester, 1870. First worked in a blacking factory at 6s. per week. Became reporter for the Press in the House of Commons. In 1836 issued "Sketches by Boz" and married daughter of George Hogarth. Wrote "Pickwick Papers"; also "Oliver Twist" as a serial. Editor of the Daily News 1846. Author of many celebrated books. With a strong sense of justice the abuses which he exposed brought about many reforms particularly in Poor Law Administration. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
