STS-104, ISS Quest Joint Airlock, 2000

STS-104, Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on July 12, 2000. The ISS passes over the Persian Gulf. The photograph was taken with a 70mm handheld camera during a fly-around inspection by the Space Shuttle Atlantis not long after the two spacecraft separated. Prominent on the starboard side of the outpost is the newly-installed Quest airlock. The primary payload on the mission was the joint airlock module, which will require two spacewalks to attach it to the Space Station. The airlock will be the primary path for Space Station spacewalk entry and departure for U.S. spacesuits, and will also support the Russian Orlan spacesuit for EVA activity. The Joint Airlock is 20 feet long, 13 feet in diameter and weighs 6.5 short tons. The ISS-airlock has two main components: a crew airlock and an equipment airlock for storing EVA gear and EVA preflight preps. STS-104 also carried a spacelab pallet with four High Pressure Gas Assembly containers that were attached to the exterior of the airlock.
