The Atlantic Ocean takes its name from Atlantis, a mythical civilization that is said to have disappeared beneath the waves long ago. Half the size of the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic is the worlds second-largest ocean, forming a gigantic S between Europe, Africa, and North and South America. The Atlantic has very few islands, yet there is plenty going on beneath its lifeless-looking surface. Swimming in its waters are large schools of cod, herring, sardines, hake, and other fishes. The millions of tons of fishes caught in the Atlantic each year make it one of the richest fishing zones in the world. The Atlantic sees a great deal of sea traffic. A nonstop stream of fishing boats, oil tankers, cargo ships, and ocean liners make its shipping lanes look like a giant water freeway.
