This aged polish woman, trudging alone on the cobblestoned streets through the ruins of Warsaw, is symbolic of the maelstrom of misrey and destruction suffered by the city of Warsaw during World War II. The city, with its population of 1,264,000, was first bombed by hordes of german planes in sept. 1939 when the germans first invaded Poland. The survivors, niw only a pitifully small remnant of the former population, are for the most part half-starved and ill-clad. Only the traffic sign here remains as a pitiful reminder of the days when traffic flowed busily through the main thoroughfares, days which the indominatable people of Warsaw say will come again.
