Washington Resigns Command of the Army

Following the American Revolution, the Continental Army was disbanded and George Washington, who had been commander in chief, took his leave of his officers in New York on December 4, 1783. This painting, by American artist John Trumbull (1756-1843), shows Washington's subsequent resigniation of his command of the army to Congress, which was meeting in the Maryland State House in Annapolis, on December 23, 1783. The painting now hangs in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
