Lakeshore Geyser, Yellowstone NP, 1928

Postcard of Lakeshore Geyser photographed by Asahel Curtis, 1928. The Lakeshore Geyser is located in the West Thumb Geyser Basin. Accounts from the 1920s and 1930s tell of Lakeshore Geyser erupting up to 50 feet. The smaller of the two geyser vents is generally not exposed until mid to late August. Although Lakeshore Geyser boils vigorously and almost continuously, and often erupts a few feet, its last known major eruption was in 1970. One day, however, earthquake activity or other processes may cause the geyser to gain energy and begin erupting more forcefully again. Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.
