Wedding dress of Princess Elizabeth - The Princess Elizabeth, eldest daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey in London. Before the wedding Philip was created HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. The prestigious commission for Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress was given to the couturier, Norman Hartnell, who had over 10 years of royal patronage. Hartnell found inspiration for the embroidery design in Botticelli's painting, Primavera, of Flora, the goddess of flowers, surrounded by trailing garlands of jasmine, bindweed, lilac and roses. Hartnell represented these flowers on the dress using raised embroidery in fine white crystal beads and pearls on silk satin. The design symbolised the promise of growth and regeneration after the hardships of the Second World War. - ©TopFoto
