Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean.39—MALTA, MARSA MUSCAT. This is a portion of Yaletta, principally inhabited by the natives, if people can be called natives who have in their veins the blood of half the Southern races of Europe. The houses here are built of the rocky soil of the island—which is itself but one large rock—and the cultivation of some parts of it (which has been brought to great perfection by continous efforts) is remarkable, when it is remembered what difficulties have to be contended with. On this barren soil all kinds of fruit—including the well-known Maltese orange—are now grown as well as corn and hay.
