The pear-shaped vaulted body is composed of 35 wooden shavings separated by fine black and white decorative bands. The lute maker Petrus Hellmer was probably a relative of the well-known lute makers Magnus Hellmer I and II from Füssen. Füssen was an important center of lute making. It was located on the old Roman road Via Claudia Augusta, the long-distance trade route connecting Italy with Northern Europe. In 1562 the lute makers of Füssen joined together to form the first lute makers guild in Europe.
