This print represents the final boxing match between Tom Cribb, a leading English pugilist, and Tom Molineaux on September 28, 1811 at Thistleton Gap in Rutland-Molineaux was a former American slave who spent most of his career in Britain and Ireland. He first had fought Crigg for the English title on December 3, 1810 at Shenington Hollow, Oxfordshire, and was defeated after 35 rounds. The return match, seen here, attracted 15,000 spectators. Molineaux hit with great power but was knocked out in the 11th round.
