NYC, Hotel Savoy, 1904

The Hotel Savoy at 709 Fifth Avenue and 59th Street was built 1891-92 by the architect Ralph S. Townsend. Construction costs were about $2 million and the decorations and furnishings of the banquet hall on the first floor alone cost $60,000. The interiors took advantage of American society's fascination of things French. There were five public parlors on the second floor - one decorated in the Louis XIV, one in the "First Empire," and three in Louis XVI decor. The Savoy accommodated both transient and permanent guests and was outfitted with the latest in safety technology - electric fire alarms. It was demolished 1925-26 and replaced by The Savoy Plaza Hotel which was demolished in 1966. Photographed by the Detroit Publishing Company, 1904.
