The King and Queen survey bomb damage, Buckingham Palace, London, WWII, 1940. Artist: Unknown.

The King and Queen survey bomb damage, Buckingham Palace, London, WWII, 1940. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth looking at the aftermath of a German bombing raid on 11 September 1940 which destroyed the palace chapel. After the event the Queen famously said I'm glad we have been bombed. Now I can look the East End in the face. The palace was bombed on seven occasions during the war. (Colorised black and white print).
