On July 24, Jacques Cartier planted a cross to claim the land for France. The 10-meter cross bearing the words "Long Live the King of France" took possession of the territory in the name of the king. Jacques Cartier (December 31, 1491 - September 1, 1557) was a French explorer who claimed Canada for France. He located the entrance to the St. Lawrence on his first voyage, which opened up the greatest waterway for the European penetration of North America. He made three voyages of exploration in dangerous and hitherto unknown waters without serious mishap. Illustration by Charles William Jefferys, undated (cropped and cleaned).
