Henry II Doing Penance at Canterbury Cathedral,1174

The Compromise of Avranches in 1172 marked the reconciliation of Henry II of England with the Catholic Church after the Becket controversy from 1163, which culminated with the murder in 1170 of Thomas Becket. Henry was purged of any guilt in Becket's murder, and swore to go on crusade, as well as effectively overturning the Constitutions of Clarendon. On July 12, 1174, Henry humbled himself with public penance at Becket's tomb. He walked to Canterbury Cathedral in sack cloth and ashes and allowed himself to be flogged by the monks there. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
