Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) with ducklings

Adult female Wood Duck (Aix sponsa), aka Carolina Duck, with ducklings swimming in a duckweed-covered pond in Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia. Wood Ducks are tree cavity nesters and will use natural cavities and nest boxes. They migrate from northern areas to just north of the Mexican border. They are protected by the US Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Hunting and loss of habitat drove their numbers down during the 20th century. They have been recovering as hunting has decreased and with the placement of nest boxes to replace the loss of habitat. They live in Florida year round. Range: Coastal areas of Western North America, and the East coast to the Mississippi River in the US.
