"Bedlam" by William Hogarth, 1735

"Bedlam", an engraving by the English artist William Hogarth (1697-1764), depicting mentally disturbed patients on a ward at the Bethlehem Hospital, London. The original engraving was published in 1735 and comprised plate 8 in the series "The Rake's Progress". Dissolution of character and destructive self-indulgence have resulted in the Rake (semi-naked, bottom left) to be admitted to the lunatic asylum. Ignored by the other inmates, he is comforted by a kind-hearted woman whilst the attendants fit him with legirons. His incarceration is serenaded by a demonic violin-player, who wears a manuscript on his head.
