NEW YEAR MAIDEN VOYAGE '' CARONIA '' FOR ATLANTIC SERVICE. Launched by Her Royal Highness PRINCESS ELIZABETH , at Clydebank on October 30th , 1947, The White Star Liner. '' CARONIA'' , largest passenger ship built this year , is to make her maiden voyage on January 4 1949 when she leaves Southampton for New York, via Cherbourg. when she goes into service the Caronia will be one of Britain's biggest and most consistent dollar earners. Striking feature of the Caronia is it's funnel- believed to be the largest one ever built-nine feet longer than either of the Queen Elizabeth's funnels. PICTURE SHOWS:- Henry E. DEVLIN of Letterkenny , Donegal , takes off his cap as he admires a bronze sculpture of a Sea Horse by Barney Seale , in the Caronia main Lounge. The ship is in the final stages of preparation at John Brown's fitting-out basin, Glasgow. 17 November 1948.
