Capture of Nat Turner, American Rebel

Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 - November 11, 1831) was an enslaved African-American mystical preacher who led a rebellion of both enslaved and free black people in Southampton County, Virginia, beginning August 21, 1831. Rebel slaves killed from 55 to 65 people, at least 51 being white. The rebellion was put down within a few days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months afterwards. When found, he was tried, convicted, sentenced to death, hanged and possibly beheaded. African-Americans have generally regarded Turner as a hero of resistance, who made slaveowners pay for the hardships they had caused so many Africans and African-Americans.
