1876 United States presidential election. Held on November 7, 1876. One of the most contentious and controversal presidential elections in American history. Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes faced Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. Hayes was the winner. During that day there were numerous scenes of tumult and violence. Commissioner Davenport presided over a polling station at the New-Post-Office in New York. In the main atrium of the building was a high iron cage or gallery. The commissioner, according to attorney Mr. Bliss, decided to confine preventively all persons who, provided with false identification cards or those belonging to other electoral districts, tried to vote illegally in the New-Post-Office college. Engraving. La Ilustracion Espa–ola y Americana, December 8, 1876.
