MARCIANO, BYZANTINE EMPEROR

Flavio MARCIANO (circa 392 - 26 January 457), Byzantine emperor from 450, refused to continue the payment of tributes to Attila agreed by his predecessor, inducing the Hun to address his interference to the Western Empire. In agreement with Pope Leo I he convened in 451 the council of Chalcedon, the universal IV of the Church. He died of a disease probably contracted during a long religious pilgrimage; with his wife Pulcheria he is considered a saint by the Orthodox Church, which commemorates both February 17th. "Marcianus Augustus", a bas-relief decoration from the band depicting famous people from antiquity and mythological themes, inspired by the medals of the Roman era, carved on the base of the facade of the Basilica of the Certosa di Pavia, a typical example of Lombard Renaissance architecture XV century.
