Engraved on the lid 2 naked female figures (above) and 2 sphinxes (below). In addition, a rotating protractor and a small pointer are provided, which also serves as a closure. On the inside of the lid is engraved 'A René Descartes' and a list with names of European cities. Inside is a recessed hole and a compass. The needle is missing. A hinged ring with rotatable cross is attached to the edge.
