George A. Kelly, American Clinical Psychologist

George Alexander Kelly (April 28, 1905 - March 6, 1967) was an American psychologist, therapist and educator, personality theorist, and father of cognitive clinical psychology. In WWII, he worked as an aviation psychologist, where he was responsible for a training program for civilian pilots. After the war, he was appointed Professor and Director of Clinical Psychology at the Ohio State University. Under his guidance, OSU's graduate psychology training programs became some of the best in the US, offering a blend of clinical skills with a commitment to scientific methodology. Published in 1955 his "The Psychology of Personal Constructs" achieved immediate international recognition. Personal construct theory is a theory of personality and cognition. From the theory, Kelly derived a psychotherapy approach and a technique called the repertory grid interview that helped his patients to analyze their own constructs (schemas or ways of seeing the world) with minimal intervention or interpretation by the therapist. Kelly also worked extensively on researching the implications and applications of his theory, while continuing to work in clinical psychology. He died in 1967 at the age of 61.
