Selim I, Ottoman Sultan

Selim I (October 10, 1470 - September 22, 1520) was a Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1512-20). On the eve of his death, the Ottoman Empire spanned about 576,900 sq mi, having grown by 70% during his reign. His conquest of the Middle Eastern heartlands of the Muslim world, and his assumption of the role of guardian of the pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina, established the Ottoman Empire as the most prestigious of all Sunni Muslim states. His conquests shifted the empire's geographical and cultural center of gravity away from the Balkans and toward the Middle East. He died possibly of an anthrax infection, cancer, poisoning or the plague. A Series of Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey by John Young, 1815.
