Killer bees

African killer bees. Macrophotograph of Africanis- ed honey bees (AHB) or African killer bees (Apis mellifera scutellata or adansonii) on wood. The yellow bulges on their rear legs are clumps of grass pollen, collected for food. AHB are highly aggressive in their defence of their nest, stinging anything that comes too close and commonly chasing intruders for several hundred metres. AHB were created in Brazil by breeding African and European honey bees together in order to increase honey production. However they escaped into the wild in 1956 and have now spread up Central America to the US. Photographed in Brazil. Magnification unknown.
