Dr. Wallace H. Carothers

Dr. Wallace H. Carothers (1896-1937) was an American industrial chemist responsible for the invention of man-made polymers. The director of the Du Pont research laboratory for artifical materials, Carothers led a team that invented neoprene, a synthetic rubber with a high tensile strength and higher resistance to heat than the natural product. His team also invented a new fiber he called nylon. Carothers, severely manic-depressive, committed suicide by swallowing cyanide in 1937.
