Brazil, Slaves Wearing Chains,1830s

Slaves in chains outside a tobacco shop. The importation of African slaves to Brazil began midway through the 16th century, but the enslavement of indigenous peoples continued well into the 17th and 18th centuries. During the Atlantic slave trade era, Brazil imported more African slaves than any other country. An estimated 4.9 million slaves from Africa were brought to Brazil during the period from 1501 to 1866. Jean-Baptiste Debret (April 18, 1768 - June 28, 1848) was a French painter. He sketched street scenes, local costumes and relations of the Brazilians in the period between 1816 and 1831. He took a particular interest in slavery of blacks and in the indigenous peoples in Brazil. Circa 1834-39.
