human brain

Illustrated lateral view of the human brain. This surface view shows the cerebral hemispheres (larger structure at top), the cerebellum (smaller structure below cerebral hemispheres and towards the back of the head) and the brain stem (thin stalk-like structure below cerebral hemispheres and anterior to cerebellum). Nearly the entire surface of the cerebral hemispheres are marked by elevated ridges of tissue called gyri separated by shallow grooves called suki or by deeper grooves called fissures. The cerebral cortex (outermost layer of the cerebral hemispheres) is the area that allows us to perceive, communicate, remember, understand, appreciate, and initiate voluntary movements. The cerebellum is the brain region most involved in producing smooth, coordinated skeletal muscle activity. The brain stem regions are the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. Brain stem centers produce the rigid, automatic behaviors that run our body functions.
